Teaching Resume Tips
By Sayaka Seino
PDF Version
On a teaching resume, the first thing an employer will check is whether or not you possess the required qualifications. List your educations and work experience in chronological order starting with the most recent experience. Do not exceed one page in length. Mention any awards or accomplishments. Adding your class rank, GPA, or other achievements can help build a great resume. Be cautious when listing previous teaching experiences — employers will likely inquire about your reason for leaving. Always be sure to show enthusiasm for the job.

Teaching Resume Tips
Teaching credentials should be one of the first things on your resume, in the education section.
When preparing a resume for a teaching job, all of the education and training you've had will come in handy. Although there are obviously a lot of interpersonal and characteristic qualities that schools are looking for in an exceptional teacher, the first things they will check will be your qualifications. Make sure these are clearly stated and well organized.

A teaching resume should follow the standard chronological format. Education and work experience should be listed with the most recent experiences first. Be concise about the information you list; your resume should not exceed one page in length. The only reason why it might go on to two pages is if you have a PhD or an extensive work history.

Teaching credentials should be one of the first things on your resume, in the education section. No matter how great you are with students, you are not going to be considered if you're not qualified. A Bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate will certainly be required. Make sure the potential employer will be able to find this information easily at first glance.

Teaching Resume Tips
Having previous teaching experiences are great but be aware that employers will probably ask why you are no longer at your other teaching jobs.
Add accomplishments and awards you've gotten as a teacher or student. If you were in the top of your class or had a great GPA, you will want to include those things in your resume to show your proficiency in the field. Any other awards given you, like Teacher of the Year, provide useful evidence of your excellence as a teacher.

Having previous teaching experiences are great but be aware that employers will probably ask why you are no longer at your other teaching jobs. This is a very common concern in the education industry and you should be prepared with your response. While there are many reasons employers aren't legally allowed to use against you, inevitably there are things that might make them leery of hiring you.

Therefore there is definitely a need to step cautiously when preparing a resume for a teaching job, but you still want your enthusiasm to show through. Just be sure to provide smart, relevant information in a straightforward and well-organized manner, and you should be on your way to landing that next teaching interview.
